The Diosa de Plata, Mexico’s film award

The Diosa de Plata statuette awarded by PECIME, a standing figure finished in silver on a black base

Since 1963, Periodistas Cinematográficos de México — PECIME, the country’s association of film journalists — has honoured Mexican cinema with the Diosa de Plata, the Silver Goddess. D’Argenta makes the statuette.

A design older than the workshop that makes it

The figure was designed by the sculptor Federico Canessi and draws on Aztec mythology: creation, fertility, the arts, wisdom and perseverance. A statuette with that history cannot be redesigned, only kept faithful — every year’s Diosa has to be recognisably the same Diosa as the one a director won decades ago.

That is the real brief for any long-running award: continuity. The figure is made in copper and finished in silver by hand in Mexico City, to the same standard each year, so that a winner in 2024 stands beside a winner from another era as an equal.

An award is a promise

In 2024 the filmmaker Ludovic Bonleux gave his Diosa de Plata to Central American mothers searching for their missing children. D’Argenta’s Director General, Jorge Abraham, made and donated a replacement so that the honour PECIME had given him would still stand on his shelf. PECIME reported the gesture on 27 May 2024.

If your award has a history

If you run an award with an existing statuette — or one whose original maker is gone — we can reproduce it faithfully from the piece itself, keep it consistent year after year, and quote the annual run in advance.
